KEEP THE LEGS YOU STAND ON by Dr. Mark Hinkes (ISBN 1-933449-71-3 $22.95) Imagine that a 747-airplane, filled to capacity, lands in your local airport every day of the year and all the passengers get off the plane, into their cars, and drive straight to the local hospital to have a leg amputated. That is the approximate number of people with diabetes who have amputations every day in the United States.
In 2003, patients and insurance companies spent $5 billion on approximately 82,000 lower limb amputations due to diabetes. The Center for Disease Control says that 60 percent of all non-accident-related lower limb amputations occur in patients with diabetes. The CDC estimates that up to 80 percent of these amputations can be prevented. Changing these statistics, as well as giving some common sense tips for common foot problems with diabetes, is the focus of this book.
